What if I said by the end of this post you will have the knowledge to never forget an idea or thought again? Would you say I was crazy? I am sure you would. However, that is exactly the claim I am going to make. I will show you how to use Evernote in a way that will allow you to never forget another brilliant idea or thought again.
Your brain is an amazing pile of grey gunk, but it has its limitations. Here is an example… Have you ever had someones name right on the tip of your tongue, but could not spit it out to save your life? It has happened to all of us at one time or the other.
Do you Remember what you did when that happened? You started giving yourself clues. You know she has brown hair, slender build, and so on. You start searching your memory to dig that piece of information up.
Evernote works in the same way but will allow you to recall anything you store in it based on those subtle clues you can remember.
Evernote will allow you to extend your brain and never forget an important idea or thought again. If… and this is a big if… if you use it the right way. I am going to layout my 5 favorite ways to use Evernote.
1. Record content ideas – when ever I have a stoke or brilliance I pull out my phone and record it into evernote. this can be anything from a product idea, dinner idea, movie you want to see, to your biggest life goals. This is super easy even in the awkwardest of situations. If you are driving simply record an audio note. If you are in a situation where you can not record audio, type the idea out, if you need a visual simply snap a picture and add it to the note.
When you get home, simply tag, title and filter the note into the proper notebook.
2. Blog Posts – If the writing mood hits me I will compose a rough draft of a blog post right in evernote. This is a great way to stay productive when you are stuck in an unproductive situation. For example, I am writing this post while sitting at the soccer field watching my son practice.
3. Never lose a receipt again – I log all of my receipts into Evernote. I do this two ways. First I use an app on my iPhone called JotNot Pro. It will take a picture of the receipt and turn it into a scan and then upload it into evernote. Super simple. The second way is to use my scanner. I bought a scanner that will scan directly to Evernote. Now I never forget an expense.
4.Important Documents – I no longer keep hard copies of important documents. If an original is not required, i scan it into evernote and shred it. I have so much more room in my office now. I have everything from manuals for the blue ray to simple contracts locked away in the cloud, accessible whenever I need them.
5. Research – I store all my research in evernote. Whenever I need the information I simply pull it up with a few clever keywords. I will create a post on how I label and organize everything so that I can easily access it. But for now check out this post for a few good I ideas on how to organize evernote.
Obviously there are a plethora of more uses for evernote, but these are my five favorite uses. If you do this you will never forget an important piece of information again. You can even use it to remember that name on the tip of your tongue with Evernote Hello.
